Journalism is in crisis and communities are suffering. Society is fracturing and becoming increasingly polarised. News deserts are expanding rapidly.
Australia has seen more than 200 local newsroom closures since January 2019 – after over 100 contractions over in the previous decade.
The disappearance of quality local news dramatically reduces the vital reporting of councils, courts, schools and hospitals. Local news coverage keeps elected officials honest and communities connected.
